"Ross Rebagliati began competing as a downhill skier but took an interest early on in snowboarding. At age 15, Rebagliati taught himself to snowboard and later won the Canadian Amateur Championship and US Amateur Championship in 1990. In 1991, at 20 years of age, Rebagliati turned professional, winning Mt. Baker Banked Slalom in 1991, US Open and European Championships in 1994, World Cup Giant Slalom win at Sestriere, Italy, in 1996, World Super-Giant Slalom title at Whistler in 1996 and 1997. In 1998 Rebagliati won an Olympic Gold medal in Nagango in the first-ever snowboarding event held at a Winter Games. Rebagliati tested positive for THC (cannabis) from secondhand exposure and was momentarily stripped of his medal. The Canadian Olympic Association appealed the decision and, five days after he won the gold medal, Rebagliati was reinstated by the Court of Arbitration in Sport. In 2005, Ross was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame."
